Green Lantern

The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic organization created by the Guardians of the Universe for the purposes of protecting the universe. Headquartered on the planet Oa, each Green Lantern is put in charge of watching over an assigned sector of space. There are 3600 sectors of the universe and at least 2 Lanterns assigned to each. They are essentially space police.

Green Lanterns harness the power of Will via power rings to manifest constructs of pure energy. They can create virtually anything they can imagine in their mind. Using the ring drains its energy which must be recharged using the actual Green Lanterns (portable batteries) of their namesake. The Central Power Battery that charges all the portable batteries is on Oa.

Lanterns are chosen by the rings themselves. To be a Green Lantern it is said one must be without fear. As part of the initiation into the Corps, each Green Lantern must recite The Oath:

“In Brightest Day, Blackest Night, No evil shall escape my sight, Let those who worship evils might, Beware my power, Green Lanterns light!”

When the legendary Green Lantern Abin Sur was killed the human Hal Jordan of Earth, a hot shot airforce pilot, was chosen as his replacement. Jordan received his training and met fellow Lanterns Tomar-Re and Killowog.

The Green Lantern corner of the DC Universe is huge, massive enough to be an entire comics universe all on its own. One unique aspect of Green Lantern as a superhero is that there is not just one Green Lantern, but thousands, made up of all sorts of different species from countless alien worlds. There are also several other human Green Lanterns operating at the same time as Jordan, including Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Raynor, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz. However, Hal Jordan is often regarded as the greatest Green Lantern of all.

In addition to harnessing willpower there are several other Lantern types which tap into the different aspects of the Emotional Spectrum: Yellow Lanterns (Fear), Red Lanterns (Rage), Orange Lanterns (Greed), Blue Lanterns (Hope), Indigo Lanterns (Compassion), Violet Lanterns (Love), Black Lanterns (Death), and White Lanterns (Life). The Violet Lanterns are also known as the Star Sapphires.
